After an 18-month detour through the ranks of American football with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, Louis Rees-Zammit is back in rugby, signed and sealed for a season with Bristol in the Gallagher Premiership. The former Gloucester winger and Welsh international has not only returned to the sport he excels in but has also brought with him some candid insights on the state of global rugby.

While Rees-Zammit is gearing up for his Bristol debut against Leicester on September 28, his thoughts are also on the broader horizon of rugby's financial and commercial challenges. Thirty years post-professionalism, the sport still grapples with economic hurdles, and Rees-Zammit finds himself in the thick of this ongoing battle.

Addressing the media this week in Bristol, Rees-Zammit shared his views on the potential of the R360 franchise concept slated for a 2026 launch. "We want rugby to be as big as possible – if we can play it on a global stage, then ultimately that is going to be huge," he stated. The winger's contract with Bristol is just for a year, leaving him open to opportunities that the new league might present.

"For me, my first rugby game back is going to be in six weeks’ time, so my full focus is playing for Bristol and hopefully making the Welsh team in the autumn and going from there."

Rees-Zammit's stint in the NFL saw him bulk up to 16st 5lb, yet he has slimmed down to 15st 7lbs as he prepares to return to the rugby field. Despite the added weight, he assures that his top speed—23mph—remains unaffected. "The skill isn’t really the issue, it’s just about being match fit," he remarked, emphasizing the shift back to rugby's demanding conditioning requirements.

Throughout his time in the U.S., Welsh rugby has faced its own turmoil, including a record 18 consecutive Test losses and significant coaching changes. Rees-Zammit believes insights from the NFL can enrich Welsh rugby's commercial strategies. "Rugby is so big all around the world, but it’s just about how we commercialize it, and I don’t think we’ve done an amazing job with that," he confessed.

As Rees-Zammit settles back into the rhythm of rugby with Bristol, his experiences in America's premier sports league and his perspective on the global market could catalyze some much-needed strategies for rugby's expansion and success on the world stage.
