Manu Tuilagi, the former powerhouse of England's rugby scene, is now making waves in France with Aviron Bayonnais, showcasing a resurgence in form that could be pivotal for his team in this season’s Investec Champions Cup. At 34, Tuilagi's rejuvenation seems linked to both his health and his happiness in his new surroundings.

During a candid chat at the Champions Cup launch, Tuilagi shared insights into his life in Bayonne since his move in the summer of 2024. "I’m really enjoying it with the family. The kids are loving it, the sea and school, that’s the big thing, so happy days," he expressed. This sea change appears to have had a profound effect on his physical condition and gameplay. Tuilagi humorously credited the "sun and the wine and the seawater" for his improved health, which has seen him play the most games in a season since 2012/13.

"The last season, I saw some stats, it was the most games I’ve played since 2012/13. I think it’s something to do with the sun and the wine and the seawater,"

His performance has not gone unnoticed, with Bayonne winning six out of the seven matches Tuilagi has participated in this season, a stark contrast to their performance when he's absent. The significance of his presence is underscored by an impressive 85 percent success rate in games he's played.

Looking ahead, Tuilagi's career could take an international turn as he becomes eligible to play for Samoa in 2027, just in time for the World Cup. While the prospect is appealing, Tuilagi remains cautiously optimistic. "When Samoa qualified, that came on my social media a lot. For me, it’s different between being interested and wanting to compete; it’s a World Cup, not a club game. But for me, I don’t even know if I’ll still play by then, still a couple of years away," he said, leaving a hint of mystery about his future.

"You never know,"

As the Investec Champions Cup pool stages approach, Tuilagi and Aviron Bayonnais face stiff competition in a pool that includes heavyweights like Leinster Rugby, Leicester Tigers, Harlequins, and the DHL Stormers. Each game will be crucial in determining whether Tuilagi's refreshed form can drive his team to glory in one of rugby's most prestigious tournaments.
