Well, it looks like Makazole Mapimpi will be missing the bus, the plane, and quite possibly the entire scenic route of the Springboks' year-end tour. The seasoned Sharks winger, who was hopeful for an on-field reunion with the Boks, has been handed a five-match timeout for a tackle that was more 'no-no' than 'go-go' during last Saturday's clash at Kings Park. The tackle, which unfortunately landed Ulster’s Michael Lowry in a heap, earned Mapimpi a red card and a subsequent seat in the naughty corner of rugby.

The judiciary didn't take long to rule that Mapimpi's tackle reached the red card danger zone, initially setting the punishment bar at a six-week suspension. But it seems there’s a silver lining after all — Mapimpi’s acceptance of his misstep shaved a week off his sentence, bringing it down to five weeks. It's like getting a discount on a speeding ticket for admitting you have a lead foot.

"The incident clearly met the red card threshold,"

noted the judicial officer, who found the tackle dangerously high on the scale of rugby no-nos.

Now, Mapimpi isn’t exactly a stranger to the world of rugby discipline. With two red cards already under his belt from 2023 and 2025, his rap sheet wasn’t exactly spotless, which certainly didn’t help his case this time around.

"I acknowledge and accept that foul play was committed,"

Mapimpi reportedly said during the hearing. This bit of honest reflection might have lightened his sentence but didn’t clear the path for international play this season.

With Mapimpi sidelined, the spotlight might just shift to other players waiting in the wings, eager to fill the void left by the veteran's forced sabbatical. It’s an unexpected shuffle in the lineup, sure to add a bit more spice to the already bubbling pot of team dynamics as the Springboks gear up for their tour.

Rugby, like life, is unpredictable. One minute you’re in, the next you’re out — or in Mapimpi’s case, watching from the sidelines. Here’s to hoping he uses this time wisely, perhaps brushing up on the finer points of tackling etiquette. Meanwhile, the Boks will have to march on, minus one fast flyer on the wing.
