Vodacom Bulls coach Johan Ackermann has lavished praise on Marcell Coetzee, hailing him not only as an exemplary leader but also a remarkable human being. Despite approaching his 35th birthday, the seasoned Springbok loose forward continues to dazzle on the field, most recently clinching a Man of the Match title after a standout performance in the Bulls’ resounding 47-7 win over the Dragons in Newport.

“I had always admired him as a player. Now I have got the privilege to coach him,” Ackermann shared, emphasizing Coetzee's influence both on and off the pitch. “He is just a tremendous human being, first of all. And, secondly, he is in great form at the moment.”

"It’s important for any team that your leaders do well and he is doing well at the moment. He is a leader on and off the field."

With the Bulls gunning for a URC playoff position, Coetzee’s role is pivotal as they face critical upcoming matches against teams like the Scarlets, Zebre Parma, and Benetton. Ackermann, drawing from his own experience as a late-playing Bok, dismissed concerns about Coetzee’s age, asserting, “Over the years, there have been a lot of people like Brad Thorn and Schalk Brits who played in World Cups when they were 36 or older. If Marcell keeps performing like he does, then age is just a number.”

After a successful stint abroad with teams like Ulster, the Honda Heat, and the Kobe Steelers, Coetzee has returned to South Africa, where his robust gameplay continues to energize the Bulls’ strategy. Reflecting on the team’s performance and his recent accolade, Coetzee remained humble, stating, “This is nice, but it was a collective team effort. Everyone bought into the plan, everybody got stuck in."

"We just want to continue the momentum now."

As the Bulls secure their place in the playoffs, Ackermann is acutely aware of the high stakes. “Every game now is massive for us. We are in a position where if we don’t win all three, the teams under us can kick us out of that top eight,” he explained, underscoring the pressure and the critical nature of their upcoming challenges.

With a clear focus and a united team, the Bulls are not just competing; they're on a mission to demonstrate that with leaders like Coetzee, the sky's the limit. As they prepare to face the Scarlets next, Ackermann’s admiration for Welsh rugby passion mirrors his own, yet he affirms, “But we have got a job to do here.”
