With Beauden Barrett out injured after a clash at Eden Park, the All Blacks' fly-half spot is up for grabs, stirring a debate between former greats about who should steer the ship in the upcoming Rugby Championship finale in Australia. Justin Marshall is pushing for a bold move from coach Scott Robertson, suggesting Damian McKenzie should warm the bench to make room for Ruben Love to start at number 10.

While McKenzie is the obvious choice to replace Barrett, Marshall believes this match presents a perfect opportunity to test Love's mettle in the fly-half position. On the Good, Bad and Rugby AUNZ Podcast, Marshall explained his reasoning, "

"You know what you've got with Damian McKenzie; he delivers consistently. What we don't know is how Ruben Love could enhance our backline dynamics with his flat play and defensive offerings."

He views McKenzie as a reliable backup who can slot in seamlessly, thereby maintaining the team's rhythm while still exploring Love's potential impact.

However, Jeremy Paul, former Wallabies hooker, disagrees. He argues that continuity is key and McKenzie should start. "

"You have to continue with what you've started with, but then have a subtle difference,"

said Paul, suggesting that altering the starting lineup too drastically could unsettle the squad's hierarchy and prompt players to consider overseas contracts prematurely.

Paul also critiqued Robertson's conservative selection strategy, pointing out that other coaches like Joe Schmidt and Rassie Erasmus have been more daring with their squad choices. He believes Robertson, now 18 months into his tenure, has missed the window to make bold selections, which could have included giving Love a starting role earlier.

The discussion highlights a broader issue within All Blacks' current transition phase, questioning whether the team is evolving fast enough under Robertson's stewardship. With the final round of the Rugby Championship looming, Robertson's choice at fly-half could either confirm his conservative approach or signal a new, bolder direction for New Zealand rugby.
