Stellenbosch University has stepped up to the disciplinary plate following a ruckus involving Maties head coach, Kabamba Floors, at a local watering hole last month. The scrum unfolded at the Brauhaus pub in Stellenbosch, where Floors, a former Springbok flanker, nearly turned barman by allegedly throwing a glass at a player from Hamiltons. This occurred shortly after a match between Hamiltons and Maties in the Western Province Super League A.
The university, sticking to its guns on accountability, confirmed the incident and the consequent disciplinary action. A tiff at the pub post-match is hardly the decorum you’d expect, but then again, rugby is hardly a game for the soft-spoken. The university stated, "SU can confirm that, in line with its commitment to accountability and good governance, the university followed appropriate processes and applied appropriate sanctions in relation to the incident involving the Hamiltons club."
While SU buttoned up when asked about the specifics of the sanctions, sources squealed to Netwerk24 that Floors was slapped with a "final written warning". As for Floors? The man’s lips are sealed. He pinged back on WhatsApp with a curt, "
"I have nothing to say"
and a polite enough request to be left out of the media flurry.
The backdrop to this pub clash? Maties’ rather dismal performance in the Super League A, where they finished an underwhelming 11th with only five wins out of 14 matches. Perhaps the stress of the scoreboard got to Floors, or maybe it was just a bad brew day at the Brauhaus.
Whatever the case, the saga has certainly stirred up more drama than a daytime soap opera, with rugby fans and university officials alike waiting to see if Floors can coach his way out of the disciplinary sin bin and back into the game’s good graces.
