Australian coach and notorious rugby commentator Matt Williams is finding some dark humor in the turmoil surrounding the All Blacks following the controversial sacking of head coach Scott Robertson. With the Rugby World Cup looming less than two years away, New Zealand Rugby's decision to cut ties mid-contract has stirred significant commotion.

"It's great to see the Kiwis in a mess, isn't it?" Williams said with a chuckle, clearly relishing the predicament of a nation where rugby is almost a religion. This disruption comes at a time when the All Blacks, historically a dominant force in rugby, are grappling with a less impressive squad.

"It's nuts what's happening in New Zealand, it is pretty much unprecedented,"

Williams pointed out the rumored internal conflicts involving player power, "You’ve got to have player power, players need to be empowered. What the rumour is… some players said that if he is the coach, we’re not playing." The notion that players might walk away from the team this close to a World Cup seems baffling to Williams.

Williams critiqued the high expectations placed on coaches in New Zealand, stating, "New Zealand’s a very, very tough place to be the head coach, they are never happy unless you win every game." He also noted the lack of patience in developing players under Robertson's tenure, "Robbo’s four-year plan was to have four quality players in every position before the next World Cup. What have you got to do to do that? You’ve got to give guys time."

"I think it is exceptionally harsh. I don’t think this is a great era of New Zealand players,"

With Robertson now sidelined, the race for his replacement is heating up. Jamie Joseph is emerging as a front-runner, though Joe Schmidt and even Irish coach Ronan O’Gara have been mentioned. However, Williams feels strongly that "It will be a New Zealander." He speculates that a possible interim arrangement could involve Wayne Smith, renowned for his tactical acumen, especially noted during the New Zealand women's team's prior World Cup crisis.

The next All Blacks coach will inherit a role fraught with expectation and scrutiny, with their next test match scheduled for July. The saga continues as NZR scrambles to stabilize their leadership ahead of a critical juncture in rugby history.
