Mavis is a feminine given name, derived from a name for the common Old World song thrush.[1] Its first modern usage was in Marie Corelli's 1895 novel The Sorrows of Satan, which featured a character named Mavis Clare (whose name was said to be "rather odd but suitable", as "she sings quite as sweetly as any thrush"[2]). The name was long obsolete by the 19th century, but known from its poetic use, as in Robert Burns's 1794 poem Ca' the Yowes ("Hark the mavis evening sang/Sounding Clouden's woods amang");[3] and in the popular love song "Mary of Argyle" (c.1850), where lyricist Charles Jefferys wrote, "I have heard the mavis singing its love-song to the morn."[4]

Mavis was among the top 100 names for newborn girls in New Zealand between 1900 and 1943 and among the top 100 names for newborn girls in the United Kingdom between 1924 and 1944. It first appeared among the 1,000 most popular names for newborn girls in the United States in 1895. It was at peak use for American girls between 1920 and 1938, when it was among the top 300 names given to newborn girls. Its usage declined thereafter in the Anglosphere, but usage in the United States has since increased in recent years. Mavis has again been among the top 1,000 names for newborn girls in the United States since 2016.[5][6] Mavis Dracula is Dracula's teenage daughter in the popular Hotel Transylvania franchise, which debuted in 2012 and has had sequels in 2015, 2018, and 2022.

So, is everybody changing names now?

Wouldn't it be an interesting dare if two historically opposed posters chose names for each other...

Upon agreement, the name stays in effect for 6 months.

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any confusion this may cause.

"So, is everybody changing names now?"

ButtPlug, I know you've worked really hard to become the Alpha-Gimp and your Master Moffie . . . sorry, Mavis . . . is your first waking thought and the last thing you think about before falling asleep, but he's not "everybody" to the rest of us.

It's just Moffie changing to Mavis, no-one else. It's not "everybody", just one person.

May 09, 2024, 12:24

What about that dare, Rooi?

May 09, 2024, 12:56

What about the dare? You said "two historically opposed posters". Who have I been opposed to historically?

May 09, 2024, 14:49

Me, Beeno, Draad, DA, Mike...

Why do I have a feeling that you're gonna find some problem with the way I used "historically"?

May 09, 2024, 15:06

My problem is with your use of "opposed". That implies some level of opposition, no?

May 09, 2024, 15:10

Do you regularly agree with Beeno?

May 09, 2024, 15:18

No, I almost never agree with anything Baboon-ou ever says but I'd hardly consider a terminally stupid, brainwashed and unhinged right-wing zealot to be any kind of opposition. I don't take Baboon-ou seriously enough to consider him an "opponent". Same with you and most of the other names you mentioned.

May 09, 2024, 15:38

Ah, okay, so you're not opposed to Beeno.

...though, last I checked, you do take the time to comment on him and his posts.

But not opposed.

I see.

Makes sense.

Poor old (sic)nek discombobulated by my name change to Mozart….with my identity clearly signaled by the image. Whereas he has on several occasions tried to sneak on here with different identities. To no avail he was easy to spot, no one else on here is nearly as spiteful and the obsession with the male tailpipe has always been evident.

May 09, 2024, 17:58

Male tailpipe lol

May 09, 2024, 18:40

Go arrange some flowers, Mavis.

May 09, 2024, 18:51

Go smell some pipe (sic)nek.
