Munster Rugby has found itself at the center of a storm following their recent appointment of former New Zealand wing Roger Randle as their new attack coach. The 51-year-old, who is poised to replace the departing Mike Prendergast, has been a subject of controversy due to a resurfaced allegation from his playing days. Despite this, Munster stands by their decision, emphasizing the thorough vetting process undergone before confirming Randle's role.

Randle, currently an assistant coach with the Chiefs, is set to join the Irish province next season, pending work permit approval. His career as a player included stints with the Hurricanes, Chiefs, and two caps for the All Blacks, along with contributions to the All Blacks Sevens and Maori teams.

The controversy stems from an accusation dating back to 1997, when Randle was accused of rape during a tour in Durban with the Hurricanes. The charges were later dropped as the accuser withdrew the complaint, though she maintained her accusation. This historical issue has resurfaced, stirring unease and backlash among some Munster fans and leading to the resignation of three independent members of Munster’s Professional Game Board—Billy Holland, Mick O’Driscoll, and Killian Keane—over the appointment process.

Munster issued a statement addressing the situation, asserting, "Munster Rugby is aware of a historical matter concerning newly appointed coach Roger Randle from 1997. At the time, no legal process was pursued, and the matter was closed. Munster Rugby carried out due diligence during this recruitment process and are satisfied with the appointment which has been ratified and approved."

"I have worked with Roger for many years, and he has always demonstrated an incredible work-ethic and ingenuity when it comes to the attack aspect of the game,"

Clayton McMillan, current Munster boss and former head coach at the Chiefs, expressed his support for Randle, looking forward to their reunion. "I am incredibly excited to be joining a prestigious club like Munster who have such a rich history and incredible supporters," Randle commented, focusing on his current role with the Chiefs and a successful season end.

General manager Ian Costello also voiced his enthusiasm, stating, "We’re delighted to confirm that Roger will join Munster Rugby this summer. We have recruited an attack coach with considerable experience, not just at Super Rugby level but on the international stage as well. We’re excited to see the impact he will have on the team working alongside Mossy and I’m looking forward to welcoming Roger to the province when he arrives in Ireland this summer."

The saga surrounding Randle’s appointment underscores the complex interplay of past allegations and professional qualifications in sports appointments. As Randle prepares to join Munster, the province and its supporters will be keenly watching the unfolding of this new chapter, hoping that his strategic acumen transcends controversy and enriches Munster’s storied legacy in rugby.
