In a swift rebound from their recruitment setback, Munster have snapped up former Leinster powerhouse Michael Ala’alatoa, following a failed attempt to secure South African prop Mornay Smith. Ala’alatoa, fresh from propelling Samoa into the 2027 Rugby World Cup with a tense draw against Belgium, will rejoin Irish rugby, signing a seven-month stint with Munster starting December 1.

Ala’alatoa's move comes on the heels of his World Cup qualification heroics in Dubai, where Samoa clinched the final tournament spot. Having recently parted ways with Clermont Auvergne, where he found game time scarce, the seasoned prop is set to return to Ireland, a place where he previously thrived with Leinster. Munster's eagerness to fill the void left by retired legend Stephen Archer pushed them to explore options, including an unsuccessful pursuit of Smith, who remains with the Bulls after renewing his contract through 2029.

"Munster are pleased to confirm the signing of Michael Ala’alatoa from Clermont Auvergne on a seven-month contract until the end of the 2025/26 season."

Ala’alatoa is no stranger to the Irish scene, having donned the Leinster jersey for three seasons where he left a significant mark with six tries in 62 appearances. His rugby pedigree is well noted, with familial ties to the sport that include his father, Vili, who played in the 1991 Rugby World Cup for Western Samoa, and his brother Allan, a current Australian international and captain of the Brumbies.

His return to Ireland is welcomed by Munster, who were in dire need of an experienced tighthead prop to stabilize their scrum following Archer's departure. Clermont’s statement reflected a mutual respect and a good rapport, underscoring his professional demeanor during his tenure with the French club.

As Munster gears up for the rest of the season, they are bolstered by the addition of Ala’alatoa, a player known for his robust play and leadership on the field. His transition back to the Irish rugby landscape will be a key storyline as the season progresses, with hopes high that his impact at Munster will mirror his successful spell at Leinster.
