Jacques Nienaber, once just a physiotherapist for the Cats in Super Rugby, has charted an improbable journey to becoming a World Cup-winning head coach, all thanks to a push from Rassie Erasmus. Their bond, forged in the crucible of both the military and the rugby field, saw Nienaber evolve under Erasmus’s mentorship from a team physio to a master strategist on the global stage.

Their story began in earnest with a simple act of room-sharing and relentless physiotherapy sessions. “We met each other in the army briefly, but then the relationship within rugby started with Rassie injuring his ankle, and back in the day, you iced a person every four hours if you wanted to have good results. We wanted him back on the pitch as quickly as possible,” Nienaber shared in a reflective moment during an interview with SuperSport.

Erasmus’s career transition from player to coach saw him take the helm at the Cheetahs, where he immediately recognized Nienaber’s potential beyond physiotherapy. Tasked with overseeing the team’s defense, Nienaber embraced a role that was virtually unheard of at the time in Bloemfontein.

“I could fake it until I made it,”

Nienaber admitted, highlighting the improvisational spirit that defined his early coaching days.

The duo’s innovative approach in an under-resourced environment laid the groundwork for a philosophy of maximizing potential regardless of circumstances. “When Rassie took over, he wanted to have a high-performance environment, so that our players don’t feel like they were lacking in comparison to the bigger unions,” Nienaber explained, underscoring the transformative impact Erasmus had on both his career and the Cheetahs’ fortunes.

Their partnership, characterized by mutual respect and visionary tactics, eventually culminated in Nienaber’s leadership of the Springboks to global glory. Reflecting on his journey, Nienaber credited Erasmus’s unique ability to spot and nurture latent talent:

“That’s a superpower of Rassie; he sees potential in people that they don’t necessarily always see in themselves.”

Their story is a testament to the power of mentorship and the unexpected paths it can forge in the high-stakes world of international rugby.
