In a fiery Top 14 clash that spiraled into controversy, La Rochelle’s coach Ronan O’Gara was shown the red in their defeat at Pau, a match already notorious for recording the fastest red card in the league's history. The drama unfolded at Stade du Hameau where, within the first minute, Antoine Hastoy was sent off for a high boot to the face of Aaron Grandidier-Nkanang.

The incident occurred just 19 seconds into the game as Hastoy went airborne to collect the ball, inadvertently striking Grandidier-Nkanang. Referee Jeremy Rozier, after reviewing the footage, deemed it a red card offense. The subsequent penalty kick taken by Axel Desperes put the home team ahead, setting the tone for what was to come. Later, O’Gara’s confrontation with the referee at 1:16 over the decision led to his own sending off in the 57th minute as the match slipped further from La Rochelle's grasp, ending in a 33-53 defeat.

O’Gara reflected on the chaos post-match, expressing confusion and frustration over the referee's decision.

"I had imagined many scenarios before this match, but it’s difficult for me to digest, difficult to understand as well. With hindsight, I understand the logic of this 'kung-fu fighting' a little better, studs to an opponent’s head. I find it hard to believe that he [Hastoy] intended to hurt the opponent. It changed the game,”

he said.

O’Gara also hinted at mitigating factors that could have influenced Hastoy's action, suggesting that it wasn't a clear-cut decision for a red card.

"The referee told me he saw blood… and that’s what decided everything. Antoine might have been caught a bit off guard. It was a courageous skill, under that first pressure, at home, especially since we had been talking all week about Pau’s aerial threat. I’m not an expert, but there were mitigating circumstances..."

The incident and O’Gara’s subsequent dismissal are now set to be scrutinized at a disciplinary hearing. With a history of previous bans, O’Gara might face a significant suspension. This latest red card adds another layer of adversity for La Rochelle, who now sit 10th in the league standings as the Top 14 takes a break for the Investec Champions Cup rounds. Hastoy and O’Gara’s actions on that tumultuous Sunday night continue to stir debate across the rugby world.
