Oscar Jegou, the up-and-coming French flanker, has been slapped with a mere four-week suspension after a nasty eye-gouging incident in the recent Six Nations showdown against Scotland. This verdict seems almost lenient considering the on-field violence caught on camera during the tumultuous match at Murrayfield.

The independent disciplinary committee cornered Jegou for his reckless behavior after he was seen with his fingers around the eye area of Scottish hooker Ewan Ashman. This happened in the heat of the 59th minute as the Scots were pushing for a try. Despite the clear footage, the incident initially slipped past the match officials, not drawing any immediate sanctions during the game.

The panel initially considered a harsher penalty but settled on a six-week suspension, citing the lack of injury to Ashman. However, Jegou's clean past and cooperative demeanor at the hearing earned him a reduced sentence. "In applying World Rugby’s sanctioning provisions, the independent Disciplinary Committee determined that the low-end entry point of six weeks was appropriate in light of the fact that (among other reasons) there was no injury caused to the victim," the official statement explained. Due to mitigating factors, including the player's good conduct and good disciplinary record, the sentence was lessened to four weeks.

"No injury caused to the victim"

The decision means Jegou will miss France’s critical Six Nations encounter against England, along with three games for his club La Rochelle, sidelining him from matchups against Pau, Bayonne, and Newcastle Falcons. This development throws a wrench into France's plans, as they were gearing up for a significant face-off in Paris, with both Scotland and France tied in the Six Nations standings.

As the Six Nations Championship edges towards a thrilling finale, this incident and Jegou's subsequent suspension add yet another layer of intrigue. France and Scotland are neck-and-neck in the race, with Ireland lurking just two points behind Scotland. The final round promises high stakes and higher tensions, especially with Scotland set to battle Ireland in Dublin.
