Ox Nche, the burly Sharks prop, has pinpointed a critical issue that needs resolution if the Durban squad hopes to reclaim their form in the looming Investec Champions Cup face-off against Clermont Auvergne this Saturday. Despite boasting numerous Springboks, the Sharks' performance this 2025/26 season has been underwhelming. With the team now under the interim guidance of JP Pietersen following John Plumtree's departure, they find themselves in a precarious 14th in the United Rugby Championship and fifth in their Champions Cup pool.

The Sharks are in a do-or-die situation against Clermont, who are just a notch below them in the standings. A victory could potentially propel them into the round-of-16, contingent on other results swinging in their favor. Nche described the upcoming match as a critical juncture, stating,

"We’re going all in and seeing it as a play-off match."

This comes after a tough season start, including a substantial 56-19 defeat to Toulouse, although they managed a narrow victory over Saracens and a recent loss to Sale Sharks.

Nche candidly addressed the shortcomings that have plagued the team, noting,

"We’ve played really well and created opportunities, but the problem is our skillset — a knock-on just before we score or guys reacting a bit late and conceding a turnover."

He emphasized the necessity of maintaining focus throughout the full 80 minutes to avoid lapses that have cost them dearly in past games.

The strategy of rotating players has been a learning curve for the Sharks, as Pietersen left many first-choice players in Durban for the recent clash against Sale. Nche believes that adapting to the demands of competing in multiple tournaments, which necessitates a larger squad and more frequent player rotations, is crucial for their success.

"For us, it is our job essentially to play rugby," the 30-year-old prop reflected. He stressed the importance of adaptation in the face of new challenges presented by the evolving rugby landscape. As the Sharks gear up for their crucial encounter against Clermont, it's clear that resolving these issues could be key to turning their fortunes around and making a significant impact in the Champions Cup.
