Exeter Chiefs' winger Paul Brown-Bampoe is making a strong case for an England call-up, according to the club's Director of Rugby, Rob Baxter. Following a standout performance in Exeter’s recent 38-14 victory over Newcastle Red Bulls at Kingston Park, Baxter praised Brown-Bampoe's comprehensive skill set, which shone brightly under the Friday night lights.

Paul Brown-Bampoe, who transitioned to the professional ranks from Durham University, has been a revelation, amassing 29 tries in 41 appearances. His performance against Newcastle was particularly noteworthy, not only for the two tries he scored but also for his robust defensive play, which included nine tackles and a crucial try-saving maneuver. His prowess in the aerial game also contributed significantly to the Chiefs' dominance in the match.

"You have to say Paul was very good last week,"

Baxter commented.

"He just had one of those games where he was in the right place at the right time for his tries, but then competed under the high ball fantastically well, kicked-chased and completed tackles fantastically well and looked a physical presence in defence and attack."

Baxter believes that it's performances like these that could pave the way for Brown-Bampoe's inclusion in the senior England squad.

"It was one of those performances you could call a complete performance,"

he added, emphasizing the importance of being well-rounded in both offensive and defensive aspects to gain international recognition.

Despite his impressive form, Brown-Bampoe has yet to make an appearance in a senior England training squad, though he has been involved in the wider England A squad and was considered for last summer's tour of the Americas. Baxter revealed that there is ongoing communication between Brown-Bampoe and the England coaching staff, noting that England coaches had observed the recent training session and had an informal chat with Brown-Bampoe, indicating a sustained interest in his development.

The competition for a wing spot in the England team is fierce, with players like Tommy Freeman, Henry Arundell, Cadan Murley, and Tom Roebuck all vying for selection during the recent Six Nations. Additionally, Brown-Bampoe’s teammate, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, is also a contender, despite a recent hamstring injury sidelining him during the Championship.

As the rugby season advances towards the Challenge Cup playoffs and the climax of the Premiership, all eyes will be on players like Brown-Bampoe, who continue to make significant strides on the field, possibly earning a coveted spot in the national team.
