The opening day of the North-South Rugby Tournament was nothing short of thrilling, with schools clashing in a display of youthful rugby prowess. Paul Roos Gymnasium narrowly held off a spirited comeback from Monument, Paarl Boys' High School trampled over Jeppe, and Garsfontein pulled off a stunning upset against Stellenberg.

Paul Roos set the pace early, surging to an 18-0 lead by halftime thanks to dynamic tries from Tiaan Basson and Caden Samuels, complemented by Travis Pheiffer who kicked eight crucial points. Monument, however, wasn't going down without a fight. The second half saw Logan Langeveldt, Blessing Monareng, and Tristan Rodriguez pierce through Paul Roos' defenses. Despite their efforts, Pheiffer's penalty in the latter half sealed a 21-17 victory for Paul Roos.

"Every point counts in games like these, and Travis really held his nerve when it mattered,"

Meanwhile, Paarl Boys’ High demonstrated their dominance with a comprehensive 37-10 win over Jeppe High School for Boys, crossing the try line four times in a powerful display of rugby.

Perhaps the most jaw-dropping result came from Garsfontein, who overturned a 13-point deficit at halftime to clinch a 21-20 victory over Stellenberg. Neil de Kock was the hero, scoring a crucial try towards the end, with Ruan Fluks converting under pressure.

In other matches, HTS Drostdy unleashed a six-try extravaganza to overpower EG Jansen 43-24, with Anwill Jacobs and Darren Makeza scoring two tries each. Waterkloof crushed Diamantveld 45-7, and Outeniqua secured a solid 30-16 win against King Edward VII School (KES).
