Once again, Pieter-Steph du Toit faces a grim repeat of history as Rassie Erasmus, the Springboks head coach, details the severity of the star flanker's shoulder affliction necessitating another round under the knife. Following a somber announcement from his Japan Rugby League One team, Toyota Verblitz, stating his deregistration for the season, du Toit is headed back to South Africa for surgery.

Erasmus shared insights into the injury that mirrors the woes du Toit endured previously, which also saw him sidelined for an extended period last year. "It’s a shoulder op. Last year he was also operated on. He had a shoulder op on the one side (then) and that’s fixed and the other shoulder is now giving problems," Erasmus revealed. The recurrence of such injuries raises concerns about the robustness of du Toit's recovery and his future in the sport.

"Hopefully he’s ready by June"

This optimistic timeline set by Erasmus underscores the hope that du Toit will recuperate in time for the Springboks' Nations Championship opener against England in Johannesburg next July. Despite the setbacks, du Toit's resilience is noteworthy, having bounced back to peak form last year, even earning a nod for the 2025 World Rugby Player of the Year, an award clinched by teammate Malcolm Marx.

However, du Toit’s injury saga extends beyond his shoulders, having previously battled through surgeries on both ankles, two knee operations, a fractured sternum, and a near catastrophic bout of acute compartment syndrome that almost cost him his leg in 2020. His medical odyssey underscores not just his vulnerability but also his unyielding spirit.

Last seen on the field on December 27 against the Kobe Kobelco Steelers, du Toit has had limited play this season, participating in only three matches for Verblitz. Each game he plays is a testament to his enduring skill and determination, traits that South Africa will be keen to reclaim fully fit and battle-ready by mid-year.

The recurrence of du Toit's shoulder issue is a stark reminder of the brutal demands of professional rugby, a sport that does not forgive and seldom forgets. As the Springboks gear up for their confrontation with an increasingly formidable English squad, the hope is that their star flanker will once again rise, fully mended, to meet the challenge head-on.
