As John Plumtree prepares to hand over the reins to JP Pietersen, he's not just stepping down; he's stepping up in a different way for the Sharks, amid what could be described as choppy waters for the team. This Sunday marks his last game at the helm during the Investec Champions Cup face-off with Toulouse, but he's far from bowing out completely.

Plumtree's exit paves the way for Pietersen, a true-blue Sharks lifer and former winger, to take over on an interim basis. "JP is the most important person in this whole conversation," Plumtree emphasized, signaling a strong endorsement for his successor. "He’s done well with our juniors and in the Currie Cup, and he’s a proper Sharks man – never played for another club, loves KwaZulu-Natal, loves the people. I genuinely think he’s going to be a good Sharks coach for the future."

"You definitely stole my thunder,"

Plumtree quipped during a press conference, addressing the leaked news of his departure. The decision, fueled by in-depth talks with Sharks owner Marco Masotti, seems timely as Plumtree eyes other ventures within the organization that ignite his passion. "There are a couple of projects I’m really passionate about that need attention in the organisation," he revealed, assuring his continued involvement in a different capacity.

His ongoing role? To ensure Pietersen never feels unsupported, much like Plumtree himself did at times. "I’ll be there supporting him, standing behind him, not in front," Plumtree stated, clear on not overshadowing the new coach. He added, "JP’s nearly 40, and there are plenty of coaches at high level at that age. He’s strong-willed, he’s got his own opinions, and when he makes up his mind, he’s hard to shift. That’s a key attribute of a good head coach."

While Pietersen's tenure is interim, Plumtree sees it as a golden chance for the homegrown talent. "He’ll make mistakes, and he’ll make good decisions – that’s how you grow. If we don’t give him this chance, it would be a shame. I believe in JP, and I think he’ll do a really good job," he asserted, hopeful for the future.

As the Sharks prepare to battle Toulouse, the real game seems to be off the pitch, ensuring the transition is as smooth and supportive as possible, setting Pietersen up not just to succeed, but to thrive.
