Quade Cooper, the former Wallabies standout, has made a bold call for a shake-up in Australia's rugby lineup, specifically targeting the crucial fly-half position following a disappointing performance against the All Blacks. As the Wallabies licked their wounds after a Rugby Championship where they finished behind a dominant South Africa and a resilient New Zealand, Cooper took to social media to voice his concerns.

Amid the ongoing debate around Australia's No. 10 jersey, a role that has seen a revolving door of players since 2023, Cooper pointedly criticized current fly-half Tane Edmed's suitability for international rugby. "For me, is he a good player? Yeah, he’s ok, but is he a test match 10? In my opinion, no," Cooper expressed, questioning Edmed's capabilities at the highest level of the sport.

"It wasn’t a brutal swipe at Tane Edmed, I just don’t think he should be playing test match rugby for Australia right now. If he’s the best that we have in the most pivotal position in the game in all of Australia. Tell me one top-tier country he could replace their top 2 10s?"

Cooper didn't just criticize; he also suggested a remedy. His choice for the No. 10 shirt is Carter Gordon, a player who had switched to rugby league but, according to Cooper, has the potential to excel in union with the right guidance. "The player we should be targeting to get back is Carter Gordon. With good coaching systems now in place, he would absolutely flourish and using the depth of Ben Donaldson, Tom Lynagh and old head James O’Connor," he detailed.

Gordon's transition back to rugby union could be timely. Having recently overcome a challenging injury in the NRL, his performance on the field is reportedly being monitored by Rugby Australia, hinting at a possible return to the union fold.

Meanwhile, reflecting on the backlash from his comments, Cooper issued an apology, recognizing the pressures of international rugby. "As for Tane. I would like to apologize. I’ve been in that position, I know how tough it is. I don’t ever want to be one of those ex-players who just sit on the sidelines throwing shade. I’d rather offer perspective and encouragement than add to the noise."
