Rassie Erasmus, the Springboks head coach, has gone on record to quash any notion that his current lineup is his strongest. After sticking with a nearly unchanged squad through the last rounds of the Rugby Championship, following a dominant win over the All Blacks, speculation was rife about whether this was his top team. “This is definitely not our strongest team," Erasmus emphasized, setting the stage for continuous speculation over his ultimate matchday 23 as the 2027 World Cup approaches.

Exploring this further, if we were to idealize a scenario where a World Cup final was imminent, who would Erasmus pick assuming all players were available? The full-back position seems secured by Damian Willemse, nudging out Willie le Roux, whose influence now leans towards mentoring within the squad rather than starting. Cheslin Kolbe, despite a recent mishap, would undoubtedly take the right wing, his prowess undebated. Jesse Kriel and Damian de Allende would likely continue their midfield partnership, bringing defensive solidity and disruptive power.

On the left wing, Kurt-Lee Arendse would be a shoo-in when fit, complementing Kolbe with speed and agility. Fly-half might still see Handre Pollard, given his proven track record in high-stakes games, despite rising competition from younger talents like Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

“If it were a World Cup knockout match, he would have played,” Erasmus had previously confirmed about Kolbe’s indispensable role.

In the scrum, the front row would likely feature Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx, and a fit Frans Malherbe, with the second row locked down by Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager. The back row would see Pieter-Steph du Toit and Siya Kolisi, with Jasper Wiese at number eight completing the pack.

As for the reserves, the likes of Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Gerhard Steenekamp, and Wilco Louw would provide prop cover with Ruan Nortje and RG Snyman as additional lock options. The dynamic Kwagga Smith and the versatile Cobus Reinach, along with Feinberg-Mngomezulu, would likely round out the bench, offering tactical flexibility late in games.

Thus, while Erasmus remains coy about labeling any current configuration as his 'strongest team', the depth and breadth of talent at his disposal ensure that the Springboks remain formidable contenders, constantly evolving under his strategic vision.
