Former whistle-blowers Jaco Peyper and Mathieu Raynal are throwing some shade on the new law trials set for the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season. Sanzaar, never shy of stirring the pot, is planning to implement five law tweaks aimed at reducing game stoppages and supposedly making the sport more viewer-friendly. However, Peyper and Raynal are not exactly cheering from the sidelines.

A significant shift in these trials is replacing scrums with free-kicks for accidental offsides and modifying ruck engagement rules. These changes are stirring up controversy, as many enthusiasts fear this could be another nail in the coffin for the beloved scrum. Speaking on the Rassie+ podcast, Peyper, now a law advisor after hanging up his referee whistle, expressed his reservations.

"The intention here is to keep the game dynamic,"

he commented. However, he noted that free-kicks might actually slow the game down as teams take time to regroup rather than capitalizing on a quick tap.

Raynal, currently leading the refereeing high performance at the French Rugby Federation, also piped up with concerns from across the channel. On Sud Radio, he criticized the Southern Hemisphere's approach, suggesting it might compromise the game’s integrity and safety in pursuit of more spectacle.

"Our championship works. Our stadiums are full, rugby is more watched than football in the country. We don’t want to follow directions coming from countries where stadiums are empty,"

Raynal argued, defending the traditional European approach to rugby that favors scrums and mauls.

Both Peyper and Raynal are highlighting a critical divide in the rugby world, questioning whether these law changes could potentially lead to unintended consequences like more kicks and less dynamic play, contrary to their objectives. As the rugby community braces for these trials, the debate continues whether this shake-up will be a game-changer or a misguided fumble.
