Schalk Burger, a titan of Springbok rugby, has thrown down the gauntlet for the new All Blacks coach, Dave Rennie, predicting a fiery initiation against the Springboks later this year. Despite the mounting pressure, Burger backs Rennie to swiftly marshal his troops, provided he establishes the right frameworks swiftly.

Rennie, who stepped into the role after Scott Robertson's dismissal following a comprehensive review of the 2025 season, faces the colossal task of prepping for the enthralling 'Greatest Rivalry' tour, which includes a high-stakes four-Test series against the reigning world champions, spread across South Africa and the USA.

"It's a short turnaround, and it starts this year with big Test matches, four against the Boks. That will probably give you a greater indication of what your player corps looks like,"

Burger commented on The Verdict podcast.

The tour not only promises intense clashes in Johannesburg and Cape Town but also a pivotal fourth Test in Baltimore, making up the backbone of the 2026 international rugby season. Before these monumental games, Rennie’s squad will clash with northern powerhouses France, Ireland, and Italy in the Nations Championship this July.

Known for his near-victory with the Bledisloe Cup as the former Wallabies coach, Rennie’s credentials also include significant stints with the Chiefs and Glasgow. Burger, who has faced Rennie’s teams on the field, regards him as a stringent, old-school coach well-suited for the All Blacks’ helm.

"Dave Rennie was about 15 seconds away from winning the Bledisloe before he got fired [as Wallabies coach]. If it wasn’t for that, he would have won the Bledisloe for the first time in 20-odd years,"

Burger reflected.

As Rennie steers into his new role, expectations are high for him to imprint his vision on the team dynamically. The transition at the coaching helm comes with its own set of challenges, as Burger points out, given the minimal tolerance from fans and players alike observed in recent coaching tenures.

Rugby enthusiasts and critics alike will be watching closely as the All Blacks navigate their demanding schedule, starting with club matches against the Stormers, Sharks, Bulls, and Lions, before the climactic Test series against the Springboks. The outcomes of these matches could very well set the tone for Rennie's tenure and potentially redefine the All Blacks' strategic contours in the years to come.
