The ripple effects of Rieko Ioane's sabbatical to Leinster are already being felt with the Blues, as the New Zealand franchise scrambles to fill the void left by one of their key players. In an intriguing twist, Blues coach Vern Cotter is now entertaining the idea of bringing European talent to his squad during the Super Rugby season.

With Ioane taking up a lucrative six-month stint in Ireland, following in the footsteps of Jordie Barrett who impressed at Leinster in the previous northern hemisphere season, the Blues have had to pivot. Their solution lies in the return of Pita Ahki, a former New Zealand U20 star who has honed his skills in Europe, most notably with Toulouse.

Ahki's return is timely. Having dominated the French Top 14 and snagged multiple European titles, his experience is invaluable. Cotter emphasized,

“He’s a local boy, and bringing him back here with that knowledge and skill set is awesome for the team. It’s nice to have people coming back in, but also people who have won and know what it takes to win.”

Cotter is also thinking bigger, seeing potential benefits in a sort of exchange program that could see European players filling gaps left by All Blacks on sabbatical.

“Obviously, there’s contracts, there’s World Cups. Everyone’s got their own interests, but the cross-pollination of ideas and experience can help,”

he mentioned, suggesting that such moves could invigorate both players and teams with fresh perspectives and expertise.

Despite the challenges posed by the loss of a player like Ioane, Cotter is optimistic about Ahki's impact and his readiness to compete: “He may surprise us and play every game. He [still has that in him]. He doesn’t have to prove anything, does he? He just has to turn up, be himself. He’s got a great skill set, and he’s already sharing it with players. A quiet guy, I like the quiet guys who have been successful; they’re always nice to have.”

As the Blues navigate this transitional period, the integration of seasoned players like Ahki could well prove to be the silver lining, helping the team maintain its competitive edge while exploring new avenues for talent exchange with European clubs.
