Ruan Venter is set to storm back into the fray this weekend as the Lions eye a playoff berth in the Vodacom URC. After a rocky start to the season, marked by a suspension and a concussion, the determined 23-year-old is slated to make a significant return against Edinburgh at Ellis Park. With just a pair of matches to his name in 2026, Venter is fired up to regain his stride as the season's critical moments loom.

Venter's early season was anything but smooth, with a four-match suspension followed by a concussion during his first game back against the Sharks. Yet, this string of setbacks hasn't dampened his spirits. "The break was not nice and I have only played in two matches this year," Venter remarked, noting a silver lining in both games being against fellow South African teams. "It helps your confidence if you do well against those teams and then you should be able to stand your ground against overseas teams as well."

"There are still six matches left before the playoffs, where you can build momentum. I’m looking forward to getting back on the field and proving myself."

While the Lions' path to the playoffs is fraught with challenges, Venter's adaptability could prove crucial. Known for his ability to play both as a flank and a lock, he is gearing up to meet the team's demands wherever necessary. "I have no problem being used at lock, and I actually enjoy it," he expressed. His enjoyment of scrummaging at lock allows him to make a more substantial impact on the game.

Despite his comfort in various positions, Venter admitted there's room for growth, especially at the No 4 lock position. "I am not yet as comfortable at No 4 lock, but I am trying to get better every day and master the finer details that come with it," he explained, committed to refining his skills.

As the Lions prepare to face off against Edinburgh, all eyes will be on Venter. His comeback could be the spark the Lions need to secure their spot in the intensely competitive URC playoffs. With Venter back in the mix, the Lions are not just fighting for a win; they're gearing up for a roaring comeback.
