The Gallagher PREM and URC seasons have kicked off with a bang, delivering high-scoring, jaw-dropping moments, albeit with a tinge of controversy. Despite the excitement, the leagues' potential to captivate the global audience is challenged by the absence of star players due to mandatory rest periods and international duties—a scenario rugby can ill-afford.

While soccer flourishes with its superstars consistently on display, rugby struggles to field its best. The Stormers vs. Leinster clash, for instance, was a mismatch not just on the field but in terms of experience, with crucial players missing from the lineup. This not only skews competition but dims the sport's shine on the global stage.

"Some of our people who hadn’t played are really struggling towards the end of the game. We need to look at that,"

stated Saracens coach Mark McCall, highlighting the tough transition players face returning from extended breaks.

Alex Sanderson of Sale also voiced frustrations,

"...that’s the internationals’ first game. So some poor decisions, some poor execution, a bit stodgy, a bit stop-starty. I was frustrated at half-time."

With the leagues ambitiously eyeing a match in Chicago, the logistics become even more daunting. Players, already grappling with the physical demands of the league, must then tackle jet lag and unfamiliar territories, potentially compromising their performance and, by extension, the league's appeal during crucial stages of the season.

While the leagues parade these opening games as a testament to their competitive spirit and entertainment value, the absence of key players paints a different picture—one of potential unfulfilled and spectacle diminished. As rugby tries to expand its horizons and capture new audiences, the current format and scheduling may just be its own undoing. The sport's insiders find joy in the unpredictability and fresh talent, but for rugby to truly rival the global appeal of soccer, it needs all hands on deck, all season long.
