Rugby over Christmas?

Who would have thought that we would be playing local matches over the Christmas period. When all the people are heading town to the coast and spending their time on the beach at one of the many coastal holiday towns.

I just don't understand why SA believe that they need to be playing over that period.

Why not just postpone the Derbies to when the 6 nations are running.

The teams would get a 4 week break, don't have to play when it is super hot.

There are 6 weeks which all the derbies could be played in Feb / March.

I would even go as far as to invite the Cheatahs to play too and maybe the Pumas.

We could have 6 teams play home and away with 10 match, 5 at home and 5 away.

The cheatahs and Pumas would has all the big teams and that would be hugely beneficial for them.

We can actually run a proper currie cup in two phases in a single calendar year.

Feb/March - Part 1, 6 teams, 5 matches

Sept/Oct - Part 2, 6 teams, 5 matches

At the end we would have the currie cup champions or have a single Currie Cup Final match.

No need for a Semi as all the games that we watched would have been close to semis any way.

We could even go one step further and introduce relegation and promotion, but not sure how that would impact the schedule when planning for the season.

December has better playing conditions than in Feb...Since our cricket went to sh!t, I prefer watching rugby in December.

Th e situation is buggered up totally sinc he S A  sides left Superrugby and bcame invovled in the Northern Hemisphere series.   That in itself leads to a large combination of matches in NH months - eg in their winter season.   A major number of CC matches are concentrated in peiods where SA teams are not inviolved in NH competitions, ie in June and July.

I agree with Draad on that one,   I used to watch cricket and tennis - but the lsat major tennis tournament was in mid-november and the 2024 season starts only on 29 December 2023.    Waching SA  criket nowadays is not advisable - it is of an atrocious loevel by SA teams.    .          .
