Ruwald van der Merwe was nonchalant about the idea of playing rugby outside his homeland until a pivotal conversation with Glasgow's head coach Franco Smith turned his prospects around. The South African loose forward, who has been a key player for the Pumas, will be taking his talents to Scotland on a two-year contract post-Currie Cup.

Van der Merwe, while speaking to Netwerk24, revealed the casual beginnings of what would become a career-defining move. "My agent Tiaan Coetzee hinted that Glasgow was showing some interest. Honestly, I just shrugged it off and focused on my game," he explained. The situation escalated quickly when Smith himself got in touch: "About two weeks after Tiaan's heads-up, he told me to expect a call from Franco. Sure enough, the call came, and a week later, so did the offer."

"It's easy to say you want to go overseas, but when the contract is in front of you, you realize it's a big decision,"

The reality of relocating hit Van der Merwe especially hard considering his family situation. "We've got a four-month-old daughter, so it's not just about me anymore. It's exciting and a bit frightening, but we're really looking forward to this new chapter," he admitted.

Reflecting on his journey, Van der Merwe feels his tenure with the Pumas has aptly prepared him for bigger stages. Leading his team to victory in the SA Cup last year was a highlight, but more importantly, it was a testament to his growth. "I’m grateful for my time here. If this opportunity came two years ago, I might not have been ready. Physically and mentally, I’m in a much better place now," he acknowledged.

This move marks another significant South African addition to the United Rugby Championship, promising to add depth and vigor to the Glasgow squad. As Van der Merwe gears up to bring his A-game to a new audience, the rugby world watches keenly, anticipating the impact he will make in his European debut.
