In a stunning display of defiance and skill, Scarlets notched their first win of the URC season, blanking the Glasgow Warriors 23-0 at Parc y Scarlets. Dwayne Peel’s squad, previously languishing at the league's bottom with no wins or points from five rounds, showed a dramatic turnaround, toppling the fifth-placed Warriors.
The Welsh team’s forward power set the tone early in the game, with Josh Macleod crashing over from a rolling maul at the 15-minute mark. Sam Costelow, the fly-half, was flawless with the boot, converting the try to give the Scarlets a 7-0 lead. The greasy conditions in Llanelli limited open play, but Costelow managed to extend the lead with two well-struck penalties, sending the teams into the break at 13-0.
"The conditions were tough, but we played some smart rugby. The boys upfront did an immense job," said Dwayne Peel post-game.
Early in the second half, Scarlets widened the gap with Macs Page pouncing on a deflected offload after a strategic kick by Costelow. The conversion was good, pushing the score to 20-0. Despite a dominant kicking game that nearly set up another score, a penalty temporarily relieved pressure on Glasgow. Nevertheless, the Warriors could not capitalize, thumped by Scarlets’ robust defense.
"We knew we had to be clinical and keep the pressure, especially with our kicking game," remarked Sam Costelow, whose boot effectively sealed the deal for Scarlets.
As the match wound down, Glasgow’s desperation grew, yet even with Scarlets' Harvey Cuckson in the sin-bin, they failed to breach the home side's defense. Costelow’s continued excellence with the boot in the final quarter ensured the Scarlets finished well clear, marking an emphatic ending to their drought.
The result not only breathes life into Scarlets’ campaign but also sends a stern message across the league - underestimate them at your peril.
