The seismic shift of South African rugby clubs from Super Rugby to the United Rugby Championship (URC) has not only reshaped club competition but, according to former Springboks hooker Schalk Brits, it has also fortified the national team's prowess on the international stage. The Springboks, under the stewardship of Rassie Erasmus, have been on a trophy-collecting rampage, clinching two consecutive Rugby World Cups and multiple other titles in recent years.

Super Rugby, once a battleground featuring the elite from New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa, along with teams from Argentina and Japan, faced a transformative disruption post-Covid-19. The subsequent geographical and strategic realignments have seen South African teams align more with the northern hemisphere, a move Brits views as a tactical advantage in the evolution of Springbok rugby.

"Although Super Rugby is very exciting, it doesn’t always prepare you best for Test match rugby,"

Brits explained how the move northward has been a game-changer. "Playing more in the Investec Champions Cup and the URC has prepared us to play a better, more set-piece-orientated game, crucial for Test matches and the fine margins involved," he noted. The challenges of northern hemisphere conditions—wet, cold, and unforgiving—have also honed the Springboks' strategic approaches, particularly in handling errors and territorial play.

"From my personal experience, I could not believe the impact of a knock-on or an error in your own half up there."

Under Erasmus, the Springboks have not only thrived in winning titles but also in developing depth, allowing them to field multiple competitive teams simultaneously—an asset that has been evident in their recent international campaigns. The team's success story continued in 2025 with dominant performances across the globe, including victories over Japan, France, Italy, and Ireland in the Quilter Nations Series Tests. The year will wrap up with a highly anticipated match against Wales in Cardiff, with the Springboks aiming to close out their successful season on a high note.

The strategic pivot from Super Rugby has arguably given the Springboks a competitive edge that aligns perfectly with the demands of modern Test rugby, a viewpoint that Brits and many South African rugby fans now fervently advocate.
