Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt was visibly incensed following a controversial 29-26 loss to the British and Irish Lions at MCG Stadium in Melbourne. The tension centered on a late-game incident involving Lions flanker Jac Morgan and Wallabies' Carlo Tizzano, which Schmidt argues cost his team the match.

In the critical moments of the game, Morgan engaged in a clear-out at a ruck, sending Tizzano sprawling. The move led to Hugo Keenan's decisive try for the Lions. Although the play was reviewed by referee Andrea Piardi and his team, they ruled it a legal clear-out, a decision that Schmidt vehemently disagreed with. Expressing his frustration, Schmidt told Wide World of Sports, “We led for 79 minutes and I couldn’t quite believe that we didn’t get a decision at the end to lead for 80, but that’s the wicked backlash that sport can have sometimes.”

"We can all see clear contact with the back of the neck which might be a different decision on another day and another time."

Schmidt's disappointment was palpable as he reflected on the outcome: “I’m just gutted. I’ve been gutted a few times in my coaching career, but that is right up there. Sometimes you just don’t get what you earn, and I felt we earned more than what we got.” During the post-match press conference, he reiterated his belief that the incident should have been penalized under law 9.20 (b), which prohibits contact above the shoulders.

“You just have to read Law 9.20 and you just have to listen to the description from the referee and then watch the vision when two players are described as arriving at the same time. Just watch the footage,” Schmidt argued, hinting at the discrepancies between the official's explanation and what he believes the replay shows. Acknowledging the human element in officiating, he conceded, “Players make errors. Match officials make errors.”

Despite the contentious decision, Schmidt underscored the importance of player safety and the need for consistency in officiating, especially concerning high tackles and ruck engagements. As the dust settles, the debate over the legality of the clear-out and its impact on the game's outcome continues to stir discussions among fans and analysts alike.
