Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has highlighted a key statistic likely to unsettle Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus after their recent clash in the Rugby Championship. Despite walking away from Ellis Park with a hefty five points, the Wallabies couldn't replicate their success in Cape Town, failing to score any points in that fixture.

The Wallabies demonstrated grit in Cape Town, battling against a slew of injuries. Key players Nic White, Tom Wright, and Joseph Sua’ali’i were sidelined before the second half, disrupting the team's rhythm. Schmidt expressed pride in his team's resilience, "I really felt that the players had done a fantastic job to roll their sleeves up and get back into that game." However, he admitted the injuries early on did cause significant disruptions, saying, "

“Losing both him and Tom Wright, who was outstanding last week, obviously caused a little bit of a reshuffle. That early, it does destabilise you a little bit.”

"

Despite these challenges, the Wallabies managed to stay competitive, particularly in the second half, though it wasn't enough to turn the tide completely in their favor. On the opposing side, the Springboks leveraged their physicality and tactical prowess, which Schmidt acknowledged was hard to compare from one match to the next. He did note, however, "

“I don’t think I’ve seen the Boks play as well as they did in the first 20 minutes last week. Geez, we couldn’t breathe. They were on us.”

"

While the Springboks emerged victorious, Schmidt pinpointed a significant concern for Erasmus: the Wallabies managed six linebreaks during the match. "I think Rassie will be concerned that there were still, I think, half a dozen line breaks, and he’ll be looking back at that," Schmidt remarked, highlighting areas for the Springboks to review before their next big game against the All Blacks.

With the All Blacks known for their dynamic play, Erasmus and his team will need to tighten their defense to counter the threats posed by their next formidable opponents. The ongoing tactical adjustments and performance reviews promise an exhilarating continuation of the Rugby Championship battles.
