Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt has pinpointed the breakdown as the critical battleground in their upcoming clash against the Springboks. Fresh off a victory at Ellis Park, Schmidt is under no illusions about the challenges ahead, stressing the need for improved performance in this "pivotal" area to maintain their edge over the world champions.

The breakdown, a zone of frequent and fierce contest, has been identified by Schmidt as a potential game-changer. Despite their recent win, Schmidt admits, "In that first 20 minutes, our breakdown got shifted backwards so quickly," and acknowledged the strength of the Springboks in this area, citing players like Marco van Staden and Malcolm Marx as particularly formidable. "Marco van Staden is very good over the ball, and they don’t need a whole lot of back rowers going for the ball when they have Malcolm Marx – he is very, very strong over the ball. Jesse Kriel is good over the ball, too," Schmidt noted.

The dynamism of the Springboks' squad doesn't just stop at the breakdown. Their experienced lineup makes them a formidable opponent week in, week out. Schmidt highlighted the seasoned players in the South African squad, saying,

"Cohesion isn’t developed week to week, that’s part of it, but it’s year on year really. Grant Williams, Handre Pollard, you couldn’t get much more experience."

He also mentioned the sturdy midfield pairing of Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel, who have proven tough for opponents to penetrate.

If the Wallabies can secure control over the breakdown, it would not only disrupt the Springboks' flow but also set a solid platform for the Australians to execute their game plan effectively. However, Schmidt is aware that "it only takes one moment of magic from the opposition to derail an entire game plan," emphasizing the unpredictability and high stakes of the upcoming match.

With both teams boasting depth and tactical acuity, the encounter promises to be a thrilling showcase of rugby prowess, where strategy, skill, and perhaps a touch of luck will determine the victor.
