Scott Robertson's tenure as head coach of the All Blacks ended not with a bang but a whimper, as New Zealand Rugby seemingly set him up for failure. The former Crusaders coach, hailed initially as a transformative figure for New Zealand rugby, found himself ousted after a tumultuous couple of years that fell short of high expectations. Despite a celebrated start, Robertson's era quickly soured, marred by underwhelming performances and rumored player unrest.

Jeff Wilson, an All Blacks legend, weighed in on the situation, suggesting that Robertson was cornered from the get-go. "I think Razor in some ways was backed into a corner the moment he took the job," Wilson remarked on The Breakdown. He described the expectations placed on Robertson as a "revolution," a complete rebranding of the team both on and off the field which proved to be an overwhelming challenge.

"They've portrayed Razor as almost the saviour. How hard was it for him then to live up to those expectations? It's virtually impossible."

The pressures of managing not just game tactics but also significant off-field commitments took a toll. Over time, Robertson appeared increasingly burdened by the role, a stark contrast to his initial vibrancy. "We've seen how he's changed over the last two years...you could just see the weight of coaching the All Blacks, it is very, very difficult," Wilson added, highlighting the transformation in Robertson's demeanor and approach.

The disconnect with the players only deepened the crisis. Wilson pointed out that establishing and maintaining a strong relationship with senior players is crucial, something that seemed to have faltered early in Robertson's tenure. "From the start, it just didn’t get the momentum it needed, and it’s put everyone under pressure," he noted, underlining the uphill battle Robertson faced in aligning team dynamics with his coaching strategies.

As the rugby world reels from the shock of Robertson's dismissal, the narrative around his tenure is complex and tinged with a sense of what might have been. His story serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of high expectations and the harsh realities of top-level sports management.
