Former All Blacks coach Scott Robertson is set to ignite the rugby field once more, this time as he takes the helm of the Barbarians for their upcoming clashes against the Springboks and Wales this summer. His role as the Barbarians coach marks his first assignment since his unexpected dismissal, joining forces with an illustrious coaching ensemble including Argentina's Felipe Contepomi, Racing 92's Patrice Collazo, and Los Pumas assistant Kenny Lynn.
Robertson, alongside Contepomi, will guide the Barbarians through a demanding two-Test tour, which kicks off against the Springboks in Gqeberha before moving on to a high-profile match against Wales at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium. This event will also feature a double-header with the women’s teams facing off on the same day.
"The Barbarians brings the rugby world together, so it’s special to be a part of it and to honour the jersey,"
Robertson remarked on his new role. Meanwhile, Contepomi expressed equal enthusiasm about his appointment:
"It was a tremendous honour to play for the Barbarians, and now to be invited to coach the Baa-Baas in a match against the back-to-back world champions in their own country is just as special. It’s a recognition of the performance of Los Pumas in recent years, and it will be a great challenge to put a team together in a week to face South Africa. I eagerly await that opportunity."
Rassie Erasmus, South Africa's director of rugby, also shared his excitement about the upcoming match: "It’s always exciting to face the Baa-Baas, and we are looking forward to hosting them in South Africa for the second year in a row — this time at the iconic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, where we have traditionally enjoyed fantastic support," he said. With the Nations Championship opener against England looming, Erasmus views the Barbarians game as an ideal setup to prime his squad.
Tickets for the thrilling Springboks vs. Barbarians game at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on June 20 are set to go on sale soon, with prices starting at R250. Following that, the Barbarians will take on Wales at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium on June 27, with tickets available through England Rugby and starting at £40 for adults.
