The helm of Scottish rugby is firmly in the grasp of Gregor Townsend, at least until the 2027 Rugby World Cup, as per Scottish Rugby's top executive Alex Williamson. Despite a rollercoaster Quilter Nations Series that left fans both cheering and jeering, Williamson's backing of Townsend is unwavering. Scotland’s performance has been a mixed bag - demolishing the USA and Tonga, yet faltering against rugby titans New Zealand and Argentina, the latter particularly stinging as Scotland seemed poised for victory.

With Townsend at the wheel since his appointment, Scotland has struggled to ascend past third in the Six Nations, igniting discontent among supporters who yearn for more from what's been dubbed a 'golden generation'. "We entered into the contract with Gregor with the full expectation he is going to take us through to the World Cup – that hasn’t changed,” Williamson asserted in a staunch defense of his head coach during the annual meeting of Scottish Rugby.

"I personally, for what it’s worth, was really disappointed with the outcome of the New Zealand game, because I actually thought that we could have won that by 20 points."

The provocative claim underscores the belief within Scottish Rugby that the potential for greatness is simmering just below the surface, despite recent setbacks. The match against Argentina was particularly disheartening; Scotland led 21-0 only to see victory slip through their fingers, a scenario Williamson described as "unbelievably deflating."

Yet, optimism isn't scarce at Scottish Rugby HQ. "I think we have an outstanding coaching group. I think we saw some real progress in a number of areas and I think there was lots to like, but that doesn’t diminish the fact that there was also some things that really didn’t go well in the heat of the moment," Williamson reflected. His words paint a picture of a team on the brink of evolution, firmly supported by a leadership team confident in their strategic direction and coaching ideology.

As the dust settles on the November series, the focus is clear: keep pushing, keep evolving, and keep the faith in Townsend's vision for Scottish rugby, a mantra that will no doubt be tested as the team builds towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
