The search for the next All Blacks head coach is reaching its climax, with Jamie Joseph and Dave Rennie emerging as the leading candidates to take over from Scott Robertson. The New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has formed a five-member panel to make the crucial decision, with an announcement expected in the second week of March. While both Joseph and Rennie have expressed a preference for leading rather than sharing the head coaching role, the final decision is eagerly anticipated.

Sean Fitzpatrick, a legend with 92 Test caps for New Zealand and 51 as captain, shared his insights on the impending appointment. He emphasized the importance of having a singular vision at the helm. "It's imperative that there is only one man in charge of the team," Fitzpatrick stated, underscoring the need for clear leadership.

"I think you need a head coach that sets where we're going and the standards and the culture and all that stuff, which I always talk about, is just behaviours and that’s about people."

Fitzpatrick highlighted the attributes of both Joseph and Rennie. "Jamie, for example, he’s got a really good idea in terms of what’s available. And he’s been involved in the New Zealand setup for a long time. Dave Rennie, he’s been around, so he knows a lot too," he said during the DSPN podcast with Martin Devlin. This insight reflects the depth of experience both coaches bring to the table.

Another critical aspect of the new All Blacks head coach will be the composition of their support staff. Fitzpatrick pointed out the importance of assembling a capable team around the head coach. "They need to surround themselves with the right people," he advised, recalling the successful dynamics in previous All Blacks coaching teams, such as those under Graham Henry and Steve Hansen.

As the rugby world watches, the decision by NZR's appointment panel, consisting of figures like David Kirk, Keven Mealamu, Dane Coles, Steve Lancaster, and Don Tricker, will set the course for New Zealand's rugby future, particularly with the upcoming World Cup in sight. Fitzpatrick’s commentary not only highlights the high stakes involved but also the nuanced understanding required to lead a team as storied as the All Blacks.
