Like a boomerang, Jan Serfontein has swung right back to where it all started. After an eight-year French affair with Montpellier, bagging himself a Top 14 title and a Challenge Cup, the 32-year-old Springbok centre has returned to his old stomping grounds at Loftus Versfeld. Now, he’s all fired up to help the Vodacom Bulls snag their first-ever United Rugby Championship (URC) title.
“It’s great to be back in Pretoria and back at Loftus,” Serfontein reminisced with a touch of nostalgia. “I loved the time in France, but I was always going to come back to play in South Africa.”
“The Top 14 is tough and highly competitive. It’s very physical,”
Serfontein commented, comparing his experiences.
But now, he’s itching to dive into the URC fray, convinced that his best years are still ahead of him. “I’ve still got a few good years left in me and believe I can add a lot of value.”
And it’s not just about personal glory. Serfontein is all in for the team’s success.
“This Bulls team has come so close to winning this title and it would be great to be a part of that when it happens. I definitely believe we have the team to do it.”
No doubt, the man’s a believer.
With pre-season wrapped up, Serfontein shared that the squad is chomping at the bit. “We’ve trained hard and I think the whole team is excited for the season to kick off [against the Ospreys at Loftus on Saturday]. We feel we’re ready.”
Coach Johan Ackermann has been the architect behind the scenes, fostering a high-performance culture that Serfontein applauds. “Coach Johan Ackermann has created a great environment for us to perform. He’s got a very clear vision of where he wants to take this team and how to get there.”
Serfontein also highlighted the fierce competition for spots within the team, a testament to the Bulls' depth. “We have two or three players in every position who on any weekend could pull on the jersey and do the job. It’s very healthy competition, and it’s exciting because it’s an indication of what this team is capable of.”
TEAM: Steenekamp back for Bulls, Willie on the bench
