The Sharks are beefing up their coaching team with a familiar face, as Scott Mathie leaves his role with Edinburgh to spice things up back in Durban. This strategic move fills the gap left by Dave Williams, who's off to sprinkle his wisdom with the USA Eagles. The big reveal about JP Pietersen stepping up as the full-time head honcho along with his dream team of assistants will drop later this week.

For those not in the loop, Mathie’s not just any coach. After whipping the New England Free Jacks into shape and snagging back-to-back MLR titles in 2023 and 2024, he hopped over to Edinburgh. There, he's been the maestro behind their attacking plays, making waves and turning heads in the rugby world.

Edinburgh’s head coach, Sean Everitt, couldn’t hold back his praise, saying,

“He is a talented coach who has brought a lot of energy and insight to our attacking game since he arrived in Edinburgh.”

Everitt’s not just dishing out compliments; he's genuinely bummed to see Mathie go but excited to see him tackle this new challenge with the Sharks. After all, the pair have a history of collaboration during their time together in Durban, where Mathie cut his teeth in the junior coaching ranks and also dazzled as a scrumhalf from 2006 to 2008.

As we bid adieu to Mathie at Edinburgh, the club sent him off with a classy shout-out on Twitter, echoing Everitt’s sentiments:

“We wish him the very best in his next challenge.”

It’s clear Mathie’s legacy at Edinburgh will be remembered fondly, but the lure of home and a chance to rejig the Sharks’ attack was too tempting to pass up.

With Pietersen likely to keep Joey Mongalo, Warren Whiteley, and Philip Lemmer by his side, the Sharks’ coaching lineup is looking as formidable as ever. The stage is set for some thrilling rugby action, and with Mathie’s strategic mind in the mix, opponents better watch out. The Sharks are not just playing; they're out to dominate the seas once again.
