In a sweat-soaked battle at Kings Park, the Sharks clawed their way to a 21-15 triumph over Cardiff, propelling them to the 10th spot in the Vodacom URC standings. Amidst the muggy Durban air, the Sharks, fueled by a double from flanker Phepsi Buthelezi, eked out a win crucial for their playoff aspirations.

The match kicked off with the Sharks setting the pace. Buthelezi bulldozed over from a rolling maul six minutes in, with Jordan Hendrikse slotting the conversion for an early lead. However, Cardiff was quick to counter, rejecting a straightforward penalty shot for a tap-and-go that saw Mason Grady dotting down wide. Callum Sheedy’s boot leveled the score, setting the stage for a gritty showdown.

The game's rhythm was soon disrupted by a flurry of handling errors, a byproduct of the oppressive humidity. The Sharks faced a blow when Hendrikse received a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on. Capitalizing on the advantage, Cardiff’s strong lineout play allowed Liam Belcher to pave the way for Grady’s second try, though the missed conversion left them just ahead.

"We needed to regain control, and the guys responded well to the challenge," remarked Sharks coach JP Pietersen.

Following Pietersen’s strategic shuffle in the front row, introducing stalwarts Ox Nché and Vincent Koch, the Sharks regained their footing. Buthelezi’s second try, off a dominant scrum, put the Sharks back in command. Yaw Penxe then left his mark with a stellar solo effort, chipping and recollecting to score, sending the Sharks into halftime with a 21-12 lead.

The second half saw both teams attempting to keep the ball alive despite the slick conditions. The Sharks, however, squandered several scoring opportunities due to overzealous passing. Cardiff managed to notch only a penalty through Sheedy, finalizing the score at 21-15.

With their sights set on the upcoming EPCR Challenge Cup match against Connacht in Ireland, the Sharks must sharpen their execution to advance. The gritty win over Cardiff, though not flawless, showed glimpses of a team finding its rhythm at a crucial juncture in the season.
