The Sharks' backline woes just went from bad to catastrophic as they wave goodbye to their Springbok fullback, Aphelele Fassi, for the remainder of the Vodacom URC season. In a recent update, Head coach JP Pietersen confirmed the devastating news that Fassi will be sidelined for three months after undergoing shoulder surgery. This injury occurred during a game against the Lions and has caused him to miss subsequent matches, including the thrashing at Loftus by the Bulls.

"He [Fassi] went for a shoulder operation, so that probably means he will be out for the three months,"

Pietersen disclosed, highlighting the severe impact of Fassi's absence on the team's strategic setup. Fassi's exit has undoubtedly blown a gaping hole in the Sharks' formation, sending the team's strategists back to the drawing board.

As if losing Fassi wasn’t enough, the Sharks' dilemma deepened with Jaco Williams, Fassi’s initial replacement, also falling victim to injury. Williams is grappling with a hamstring issue, further complicating the selection scenario for the beleaguered coach. "We've got a lot of injuries in the backline," Pietersen lamented, "Jaco was playing last at fullback against the Bulls, obviously struggling with a hammy problem."

In a bid to stabilize the rocking ship, Blitzbok Luan Gillmore is set to don the No. 15 jersey in the upcoming clash against Munster at the Shark Tank. This marks yet another reshuffle in the team’s lineup as they strive to find solid ground. The pressure is on, especially considering the history between the Sharks and Munster, who last faced off in a nail-biting URC quarter-final decided by a penalty shootout.

"They’re a quality side with a strong culture. They never give up and they showed that against us before. It’s going to be a proper contest again,"

Pietersen noted, acknowledging the formidable challenge that lies ahead. With the backline in disarray and key players out, the Sharks are under immense pressure to perform, making this weekend's game a critical test of their resilience and adaptability.
