Former Sharks standout Hugh Reece-Edwards has a few choice words about the current state of his old team: It’s time to stop the celebrity signings and start pumping up the farm team! Despite rolling out a squad that reads like a Who’s Who of rugby, the Sharks are currently floundering, winless after four games in the URC and languishing in 14th place. Their latest misadventure? A 34-26 faceplant against Ulster right at home in Durban.

Reece-Edwards, who’s not just a former player but also a past coach and a three-time Springbok, thinks the team is missing robust backup players. “You need that depth. It’s not just about numbers. If Eben Etzebeth is away, you want a player who’s a real stalwart stepping in, with a youngster learning from him,” he explained.

“We’ve got a number of Springboks, but who are the next guys who are going to become Springboks? Besides young Ethan Hooker, there aren’t many knocking on the door – and that’s really what you want.”

His critique doesn’t end there. Reece-Edwards suggests a shift in recruitment strategy, focusing less on the big names and more on nurturing potential future Boks. This proactive approach would prepare the team for inevitable absences during fixtures and restrictions like the 30-game cap per year.

He nods to the Bulls’ strategy as something to emulate, particularly highlighting their smart move in bringing back Marcell Coetzee. “A classic example is bringing back a guy like Marcell Coetzee. There are players who’ve played a bit of Test rugby, gone overseas, done well, come back again and still really put their hand up for their team. That sort of player is invaluable.”

With the team gearing up to face the also winless Scarlets, Reece-Edwards underscores the urgency for a standout performance. “They’re under massive pressure now. Whoever they pick, it’s probably going to be the top side again. Even if they beat the Scarlets, the sceptics will say they only beat the bottom side, so they’ve got to perform well this week, and again the following game.”

It’s clear that the Sharks might have more than just opponent teams to wrestle with; they’ll need to tackle their strategic approach to squad building and player development if they hope to regain their bite in the URC.
