In a gritty showdown in Durban, the Sharks clawed back from a deficit to snatch a 21-12 victory against the Bulls, with Jaden Hendrikse emerging as the game-changer from the bench. The match, largely dominated by the Bulls, took a dramatic turn thanks to the strategic brilliance of Sharks head coach JP Pietersen and the dynamism of Hendrikse. This marks a pivotal moment for the Sharks in the 2025/26 United Rugby Championship season.

Hendrikse, a discarded Springbok, was pivotal in the final quarter, securing two vital turnovers and executing a flawless box kick that set up Edwill van der Merwe for the winning try. His performance didn’t just turn the game on its head—it also drew commendations from his coach. Pietersen, reflecting on the nerve-racking last 20 minutes, lauded Hendrikse’s crucial interventions. “There was a lot going through my mind in that last 20 minutes – I can’t really recall everything,” Pietersen admitted. “But I have to give massive credit to Jaden.”

“I think he made four or five big moments in the game that really changed it for us. That’s what you want from your bench – energy and impact. When those guys come on and lift the tempo, it makes a massive difference, and Jaden did exactly that today.”

The victory is significant for Pietersen, marking his second consecutive win as Sharks head coach since taking over from John Plumtree. Despite the euphoria of the win, Pietersen remains grounded, aware of the areas needing improvement, especially in aerial battles and scrum engagements against formidable teams like the Bulls. “We could’ve done a bit better with winning the ball in the air,” he noted, stressing the ongoing need for tactical and technical refinement.

The Sharks’ triumph over the Bulls not only provides a morale boost but also propels them to 12th in the URC standings. Looking ahead, the Sharks are set to face the Lions in Johannesburg on January 3, where they aim to continue their tactical aggression and refine their execution. “For us to score three tries in those conditions is massive. We still wanted to attack and move the ball, and I loved the bravery to keep giving it a go,” Pietersen concluded, hinting at the resilient spirit he hopes to foster within his squad.
