Amid a rocky start to their United Rugby Championship (URC) campaign, the Durban-based Sharks are staring down a pivotal clash against the Scarlets this coming Saturday at Kings Park. With the heavyweight tag but performances that have been anything but, the Sharks, featuring a bevy of Springboks, are desperate to snag their first win after a disappointing 34-26 tumble against Ulster last week. Sitting uncomfortably at 14th place after four rounds, the pressure is mounting, especially when compared to the Scarlets, who themselves are propping up the table after three consecutive losses.

Reflecting on the team's recent struggles, Sharks center André Esterhuizen didn't mince words. "It's been a tough week," he confessed. Last Saturday's effort was marred by lackluster aggression and costly individual mistakes. Esterhuizen revealed, "Last week we wanted it badly, but I don’t think we were aggressive enough. We made a lot of individual errors, which obviously affects the team."

"But the boys have responded well. We had some hard meetings on Monday and took a hard look at ourselves. We can’t change what’s happened, so the focus is on the next game before the big [URC] break."

The Springbok stalwart emphasized the necessity for unity and collective performance. "The key message [this week] is just everyone getting on the same page so that we can play to the level we know we can. There’s no use having a superstar team if we don’t play like one," he stated firmly. The mantra within the camp is all about cohesion—sticking together through thick and thin, embracing the essence of team sports.

When asked about last season's encounter with the Scarlets, which ended in a gritty 12-3 win for the Sharks, Esterhuizen recalled the chaotic nature of the game. "Every time we’ve played the Scarlets, they’ve made the game quite messy," he noted. The Welsh side's preference for a loose, turnover-happy game made for "a messy game with lots of broken play and turnovers." Looking ahead, he expects nothing less than a tough physical contest but remains confident. "They’ve also got flair, they play attacking, running rugby. We just need to counter that and play to our strengths."

With the stage set for a battle that could define the early contours of their season, the Sharks know all too well that now is the time to start swimming or sink further—superstars or not, it's about time they play like one.
