This weekend's Six Nations and Rugby Europe Championship fixtures are poised to throw the World Rugby rankings into disarray, with several matches potentially catapulting lower-ranked teams above their higher-ranked adversaries. The action kicks off with England, currently fourth, squaring off against fifth-placed Ireland in a match that could redefine the pecking order.

If Ireland secures a victory over England by 15 points or less, they will ascend to fourth place. However, a win by over 16 points would catapult Andy Farrell's squad into third place, leapfrogging the loser of the France-Italy bout regardless of its outcome. "A tight win for Borthwick’s charges won’t reclaim third place if France triumphs over Italy, but a substantial margin could," Farrell pointed out, highlighting the stakes of the weekend clashes.

Italy, on a high after nearly overcoming France in their last meeting, could dramatically improve their ranking with a win in Lille. They currently stand a chance to reach an all-time high of seventh, should they best France and if Scotland fails to defeat Wales by more than 15 points. On the other hand, Scotland has an opportunity to surge past Fiji and Australia in the rankings with a robust win against Wales and an Italian loss.

Wales faces a dire situation, potentially slipping below Japan and Georgia to 14th place if they lose to Scotland and other results go against them. Conversely, Spain could reach a historic high of 14th with a victory over Georgia, surpassing their previous best since the rankings' inception in 2003.

In the Rugby Europe Championship, Portugal could climb one or two ranks with a win over Romania, who themselves cannot improve their 21st place standing this weekend. Switzerland and the Netherlands are also set for pivotal matches that could see significant shifts in their respective standings.

"We're focused on getting our title hunt back on track,"

Steve Borthwick stated, underscoring the high stakes for England in their upcoming match against Ireland, where questions around Farrell's handling of the fly-half battle continue to loom large.

With the rugby world's eyes fixed on these pivotal matches, the outcomes are sure to bring significant shifts within the top tiers of the world rankings, making this weekend a critical juncture in the Six Nations and Rugby Europe Championship saga.
