Eish wena, why you can't support the Long Road to the WC?
Eish wena, why you can't support the Long Road to the WC?
He's so good we have to take him off the field after 60 minutes in tight games to make sure we don't win by more than 1 or 2 points just to keep things interesting. The uninformed would think neither his captaincy nor his play in tight games is of any consequence, but that would be silly, surely.
Bunch of idiots
With the current crop of international players available to represent RSA today even Ramaposa would look good as the coach/manager.
If Mallet did not drop Gary Teichman for his WP player/pal who knows what would have happened at that WC.
Some excellent players/motivators have held the post as captain but managed by weak individuals resulted in losses that should never have taken place.
I give credit to Vermeulen in the last two WC's as it is clear who was motivating/inspiring the players.
Thanks AJH, the more is see if Kolisi the more it irratates me. It is stolen valor. Yes, he is a good player, yes he played well in the 2019 final and it was his best game. Was he the best in 2023. Rassie subbed him before half time in the playoffs and gave the captaincy to Bongi. Then there was the fall out between Vermeulen and Kolisi + eben. How these two thought they were bigger than the team. Actually both of them got yanked off the field early.
If you compare to him to John Smith or Pienaar as a leader, he doesn't come close. I never see him actually talk to the players or trying to get the guys to focus.
But the worse are the bloody reporters that hype him up so much. To me the best world cup captains were Mcaw and Eales. He is not the only world cup winning captain with two medals.
The days of Kokis are coming to an end.
The man was part of two successful WC campaigns. Rassie picked him for a reason and, by chance, fate by design, it worked.
So we have to give credit where it's due.
...but the days of Kolisi are indeed coming to and end and the days of Sacha, Hanekom, Hooker and Fassi are upon us.
...and I'm so here for it.
Spot on Plum.
Cannot wait for the next generation of quality players to take over.
Out with the old and in with the new talent.
The only quotas I want to see in the bok team is how many elderly players should make the World Cup squad. Do we want Willlie, Kolisi, Dud, Fat all at 37 in the World Cup team, even Bongi is getting on.
This is the year to blood young talent. I'm not saying throw the old away, but imagine having 7 players over 35 starting. How on earth are they going to get through a longer tournament that now has an extra top 16 game and more teams.
I see Rassies method in bringing a hungry player like Deon Fourie or Schalc Brits, but both had something in common. They were both flanks / hookers. And they both played every game like it was their last. They never let the Boks down. So maybe Rassie likes keeping these guys around. But I can't see Kolisi going to hooker or even making the next World Cup.
Even Pepsi is starting to gain real form and living up to his promise. Hope to see more of him in the knock outs.
Check out the new poll....
Available on desktop only at the moment.
Kingcorn's post is dripping with sarcasm.
I voted Siya. No brainer if you ask me.
Schalk is 10 times the player Kolisi is….poll or no poll.
Moffie, ask the nice nurse to read you the title of the poll.
It's voting on best captain, not best player.
Duh!
Actually Cooker the poll doesn’t appear on my phone. So even if there was a nurse, far more likely in your case, he or she wouldn’t be able to read any headline.
However, if asked I would probably pick Vermeulen the leader who turned around losing positions in at least 3 critical WC games…France and England, and Wales in 2019. All while Koloosy was on the bench.
Helpful?
No way in hell is Schalk a better player than Kolisi
Schalk was as predictable as fuck at test level, he only started playing good rugby when he moved to Saracens
A hard man that offered a hard edge
Kolisi is a better athlete and a far better attacking player than Schalk
Kolisi over Schalk all day long - Schalk in reality was not an openside - he was more your blindside basher but given the Boks had Juan at 7, Schalk had to play 6
Well Schalk was IRB player of the year in 2004….by your own logic that makes him better.
Nope I’ve never defined PSDT by his awards they just serve to reinforce what others think of him
I prefer Kolisi over Schalk - both great players but very different. Like I said for me Schalk was not a 6 just like Frans Louw was not
The Boks won the 2004 TN and were within 5 minutes of winning 2005. In 2006 they won 5 matches and lost 7. finishing bottom in the TN, without Schalk.
In 2007 Schalk came back, never quite the same, but still a force and we won the WC …..and we won 10 of the 11 matches Schalk played.
He was a player who lifted the Boks. He gets my vote.
Skulk is a #6 or nothing at all. He was never a strong or gifted ball carrier.
What I'll always say about Skulk is that if I was the team without the ball, he's the player I'd most want to go on and win the ball for me. His play to the ball was as good as Heinrich Brussow or Malcolm Marx and that is saying something.
Schalk was as hard as nails the man you want in the trenches with you - he was skilful but was never allowed to display those skills at test level - he was used as a battering ram - he literally used to target contact
When he moved to Saracens they utilized his all round skills, you saw Schalk attacking space and playing a linking role for them - something Jake should have done with him at test level
Schalc Brits or Burger?
All I say is that Schalc burger can play play a whole game plus over time and sudden death. Kolisi could never get past 50 minutes. How that makes him great, I beg to differ.
Richi Mcaw once said, if a player cover so much ground in a game and he doesn't make a difference in the game what is he doing? So if Kolisi was both a smart player like mcaw, he would have a far greater impact on the game and would be able to get through the game. But he likes hanging in the tram lines amongst the backs. He hardly ever goes over the ball, always bounce away from the break down and moves to the 2nd channel and hardly make one on one tackles. Most of his tackles are assist. You never see him at the bottom of the ruck or when they driving for the try line. If he founds himself there, it always ends up in a try.
If I was the opposition, I would just tell them to drive at Kolisi, he hates getting physical and you can expose him. The only time he tackles or dominates is when he can get on the front foot, that is why he always shoots up.
Siya is to KC what Andre Esterhuizen is to ou Maaik.
Pointless trying to even engage when the minds are so firmly set.
KC, it doesn't matter how many volumes of anti-Kolisi bile you spew, from here on in, Siya Kolisi will always be in the conversation for best Bok skipper of all time.
Unless of course you want to base it on something other than success . . .
Quite apart from his abilities, Siya is also a hero in a nation that needs heroes.
I admit he's not fit enough. But for all the benefits he brings, I'll take Siya for 50 odd minutes and then give the likes of Roos, Kwagga or Hanekom a chance. I'm not yet convinced by Marco van Staden but he seems to be Rassie's first choice for now.
Siya is a class act both as player and person
Siya is a so so player, that play,s great sometimes….but he is a better statesman ….well that is his main task….
Bullshit
Kollisi is not that good to be rated irreplaceable…..The Statesman part looks to be taken over by Pepsi that is also far from the best flanker we have…..
Also Kollisi,s successful reign heavily relied and still relies on the Background Captains.
Thor, Eben and Pieter….not trying to burst anyone’s bubble here, but atleast 25% of SA Rugby is a farce…
Interesting poll result...I voted Teichmann, but only marginally...for me Kolisi was a very close second to the captain who ran up the most Bok wins in a row...glad to see Siya is rated so highly on this board as only members can vote.
... interesting indeed...Wonder who vote for Pienaar...and John Smit...
So we vote for a captain who left the field with the Boks in arrears against Wales (99), England and France. And yet we vote for the man because the Boks turned it around when he was off the field.
Seems a bit illogical.
Who did you vote for?
Nobody, but if I could I’d have voted for Vermeulen. I know these days it’s all about the spin, but I prefer a bit of honesty.
"Nobody, but if I could I’d have voted for Vermeulen."
What was stopping you, Moffie. You say "If i could" . . . why couldn't you?
The real captain for me is Duanne. He was the one player that had to sit in the background, but he was the guy doing the press. He was the guy talking to the players. He was the guy who was a waterboy when needed. He was the player that played in both world cup finals and probably stayed on longer than Kolisi.
That is why I am not a fan. It is another delusional front. To me Duane is the guy that just got on with it.
So that is my captain and the player who should be celebrated, but as we have seen. He is an Afrikaner and a white boy may never lead the team. Well played Rassie for keeping the politicians at bay, but I would have never select Kolisi in my starting line up or in big games. To me he is a 7, but I have PTSD as my 7. So no room for him
Yeah for sure Duane was a great leader, but he is not here anymore.
My biggest problem with Kolisi is that he doesn’t play long enough and not hard enough.
Instead he sits on the sidelines chatting and high fives with the other princesses:)
Play more Rugby Lead by example and putting the celebrity part more in the background ….
What was stopping you, Moffie. You say "If i could" . . . why couldn't you?

Yep I had the same thing that I couldn’t see the Captain,s Poll on my phone.
Was it only visible over Computer?
Apparently.
Who has been the best Bok captain since readmission? Do you agree with Kingcorn?
Francois Pienaar
Joost
Gary Teichmann
John Smit
Jean de Villiers
Siya Kolisi

Which other captain can boast 2 World Cup medals and only play 55 min per game for the Boks and yet still produce such a sterling result of his team.
We had John Smit with only one World Cup medal and poor Bismark had to sit on the bench because Smit was that good of a player. He eventually decided to go back to Loosehead prop to give the young upstart Bissie a crack to play for the Boks.
Don't forget poor Jean De Villiers that had a 80% win record as captain but only for a broken Jaw to cost him.
Don't forget Teichman and his chargers with 17 in a row winning record or would ever forget Francoius Pienaar with that lowly World Cup medal. He has don't well with his chip adds.
We can dispute two world cups and only 55 min played, yellow card in the final and never closed a game, that is how good his captaincy is. But wasn't Bongi the captain in the closing stages of the Semi against England where the poor guy broke down into tears. Wasn't it Pieter Steph Du Toit that had to pull the players together at half time.
Kolisi is a great cheerleader and makes a lot of noise around the changing rooms with his clapping and singing. Always ready for a photo op with the fans.
Or who would forget that old useless 8 Vermeulen that stood under the post and lectured the players to pull themselves together. Great leader to stand on the side and let the other players speak for you. He was such a good leader that Rassie demoted himself to become a water boy during the lions series and had to issue a 107 min video on how poor the ref was while poor Siya couldn't get a word in While Paul O Connel was on a date with the ref during the lions match.
Greatest player and bok captain ever!!! No doubt
