That reminded me of what happened the Friday evening before he 1970 final match, I was working for the Department of Forestry at the time and the Friday evening before the match was the annual braai of the Forestry Department staff in Pretoria and we all had far too much joy juice in us to be sober. So like all illogicals we were discussing the final the next day in Kimbeley and decided at about 1 am that Saturday that it is our duty as the mighty then Northern Transvaal (now Blue Bulls) supporters to go to Kimberley for the match.
My car had a full petrol tank so we were to use my car. nobody knew who actually drove the car - but at sun-up we were in the car next to the road near Warrenton so we had to get to Kimberley to see the match The giuy in the driver seat denied that he drove the car from Pretoria to Warrenton . There was a problem though none of us had money with us to buy entry tickets so off to Trust Bank so I can draw money for a few essentials like match tickets. Those days it was very difficult. If you want to cash a cheque the bank branch had to phone the local branch where I had to have my account in Pretoria and they gave permission to cash my cheque for R50, In todays money it would have been over R4 500.
In any event after an hour the R50 was paid to me and by now we were all terribly thirsty so off we go to the bar for a few beers and then we went to the match. The match itself was typical Northern Transvaal and Griqua rugby - deadly boring to watch with a hang over, The bloody useless Qriquas beat Northern Transvaal 6-0, The hangover lot did not remember much about the match and there was a mountain to climb getting back to Pretoria that evening.
So once ever half century something very unusual can happen after all. .
