Former Springboks coach Jacques Nienaber has shed light on how the South African national rugby team, once plagued by low self-esteem and dismal rankings, has come to authentically embody their status as world champions. This transformative journey began when Nienaber and Rassie Erasmus took charge in 2018, targeting the 2023 World Cup for ultimate victory. Surprisingly, they reached this pinnacle four years ahead of schedule, clinching the 2019 Rugby World Cup title in Japan.

Nienaber, who spoke to SuperSport's Matthew Pearce about his tenure, highlighted the critical role of embracing and learning from failure in sustaining success.

"It’s something that we started when the Boks won the World Cup in 2019,"

he said. Before that triumph, the team lacked firsthand experience in championship ethos, except for veteran Frans Steyn from the 2007 squad. Post-victory, it became imperative for the Springboks to evolve continually and innovate beyond established practices to stay ahead of the curve.

The former coach emphasized the necessity of setting ambitious, often uncertain goals—a mindset shift from their underdog days.

"You must be comfortable with the uncomfortable, and the uncomfortable part is the fact that you might fail sometimes, but you are chasing goals that have never been there before."

This approach not only prepared the team for the pressures of defending their title but also facilitated a mental transition from underdogs to champions with grace and humility.

Nienaber now watches from afar, having moved on to coach at Leinster, but remains impressed with how the Springboks have matured into their role as leaders in the rugby world. Their journey from underdogs to world champions is not just a testament to their skill, but to their unparalleled ability to grow, adapt, and embrace the ethos of true champions without a hint of arrogance.

This evolution of the Springboks under Nienaber and Erasmus’ guidance is a compelling narrative of resilience, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of excellence in the world of international rugby.
