As the Springboks set their sights on an unprecedented third consecutive Rugby World Cup title, former Springboks hooker Schalk Brits has peeled back the curtain on the mindset fueling head coach Rassie Erasmus's strategy. Currently, South Africa holds the top spot in World Rugby's rankings, thanks to a string of commanding performances this season, including a near-flawless end-of-year European tour.

Erasmus's squad has been on a tear, securing wins against Japan in London, France in Paris, Italy in Turin, and Ireland in Dublin. With a record of 12 victories out of 14 matches this year, their only stumbles were during the Rugby Championship, facing defeats by Australia in Johannesburg and New Zealand in Auckland. Since Erasmus took the helm in 2018, the Boks have clinched two World Cups and a series against the British & Irish Lions, not to mention consecutive Rugby Championship titles in 2024 and 2025.

In a revealing discussion, Brits shared insights into the driving forces behind the team's success and Erasmus's leadership style.

"The one thing Rassie hates is complacency and entitlement. He will keep fighting against those things that creep in when you are successful,"

Brits disclosed. He emphasized that Erasmus continually reminds the team that their efforts extend beyond mere victories; they symbolize hope and unity for South Africa.

Brits reflected on the historical context of the team's evolution, noting the significant milestones from predominantly white representation in 1995, to the diverse squad led by Siya Kolisi in 2019.

"Nobody has done three in a row,"

he pointed out, underscoring the historical significance of what the Springboks are striving to achieve.

The unwavering support from a diverse fan base back home plays a crucial role, according to Brits. This support not only boosts the team's morale but also cements the profound impact their performance has on the nation. As South Africa continues to dominate on the international stage, the blend of strategic brilliance and deep national pride appears to be an unbeatable combination, keeping the Springboks at the apex of world rugby.
