In a startling twist within the rugby world, Springboks prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye finds himself sidelined not due to injury or form but following an “adverse analytical finding” in a routine drug test. The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport Chief Executive Officer, Khalid Galant, revealed that despite the finding, Ntlabakanye was not immediately suspended but omitted from upcoming matches against the All Blacks by a strategic decision from SA Rugby.

The issue came to light when SA Rugby announced that the substance Ntlabakanye tested positive for was not intended to enhance performance. It was prescribed for legitimate medical reasons early in 2025, monitored by a specialist. “Ntlabakanye was transparent in his declarations, acted in good faith and at all times followed the medical due process as prescribed by the industry,” stated SA Rugby's release. They emphasized his adherence to professional medical advice without seeking any unfair competitive edge.

Despite these assurances, the decision was made to exclude him from the squad to allow focus on his defense for the upcoming disciplinary hearing. Galant noted, “The non-selection of the athlete for the NZ tour is a SARU decision,” indicating that the steps taken were precautionary and procedural.

"I have always played the game with integrity and respect,"

Ntlabakanye asserted through a statement from his management.

"I trust that the process will show I did not seek to gain an unfair advantage. My only wish is to represent my country with honour."

In his absence, Rassie Erasmus, the Springboks' coach, has not named a direct replacement, relying instead on the depth of the squad. Tighthead options include Thomas du Toit, Vincent Koch, and Wilco Louw, while Boan Venter, Ox Nche, and potentially Jan-Hendrik Wessels could cover the loosehead side.

The Springboks are set to face a formidable challenge at Eden Park, where the All Blacks boast an impressive undefeated streak in their last 50 Tests. Following the New Zealand games, the team will return to Durban to play Argentina before wrapping up their Rugby Championship campaign against the same team at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.
