The scrum, a traditional stronghold of South African rugby, is under threat from new World Rugby laws, and Springboks prop Thomas du Toit is not holding back his disdain. Known for their formidable set-piece, the Springboks' reliance on scrum power has been crucial to their consecutive World Cup victories. However, World Rugby's recent law changes aim to diminish the scrum’s impact, much to the frustration of players like du Toit.

World Rugby's controversial amendment now prevents teams from opting for a scrum following a free-kick, a move seen by many as an attempt to weaken teams like South Africa who excel in this area. "Depowering the scrum, I find it strange because it’s like a slap in the face for the players who’ve been working incredibly hard to get that result," du Toit expressed in a recent interview with the Times.

"It’s not something that was given to us. Ireland, or whoever we played, didn’t decide that they were going to go backwards in the scrum,"

Du Toit highlighted the intense preparation the team undergoes, which often surpasses the physicality of actual match play. "Training sessions are brutal. They’re more difficult than the games for us," he said, underscoring the effort it takes to dominate in the scrum.

The prop's strong performance has not been limited to the international stage. Since joining Bath, his career has soared, contributing significantly to their Premiership victory and positioning them as strong contenders for the upcoming Investec Champions Cup. "Going back-to-back Prem winners would be something special," du Toit noted, optimistic about their chances in the Champions Cup thanks to the team's continuity and preparation.

Despite his imminent return to the Sharks at season's end, du Toit’s focus remains unwavering. His time in the West Country has been a testament to his growth and impact on the field, reflecting his dedication to both club and country. As the debate around the scrum continues, players like du Toit are vocal in their commitment to preserving the integrity and importance of this key element of rugby union.
